The Landsknecht was the archetypal mercenary of the late 15th and most of the 16th century, with their heyday being in the second quarter of the latter. They were pretty much the meanest & baddest soldiers around that time, with a heightened sense of fashion. Our goal is to create weapons a period Landsknecht would be proud to use, mostly on a budget that keeps it accessible to modern recruits.
Due to the continuous research we are doing, we sometimes stray from that time and location to better understand trends that led to the development of weapons we aim to recreate. We are progressing from simpler items towards the more complex ones. We started with making Messers in 2016 and it was our main focus in these past few years. We intend to cover most of the styles relevant to our interest, while we’re planning to expand our repertoire with Katzbalgers, Bidenhanders, various daggers and all kinds of awesome stabbiness in the foreseeable future.

Before we’ve entered the path leading to HEMA, SPES have been a part of historical reenactment for years. Their team took part in numerous knight tournaments, including buhurt. That’s when they learned about the importance of proper durability of the equipment. They were wondering how to combine the best durability with hight level of mobility. So, they’ve started to manufacture our their arming garments and steel parts of armor, and later even civil clothing. First for their own needs, but later also for others.
Their first HEMA gear was designed in 2007 for Fechtschule Gdańsk, with Andrzej Zmuda Trzebiatowski and Jan Chodkiewicz. From that time such groups and HEMA teachers are their consultants in creating dedicated clothing and overlays. In the course of time they have extended their activity with products for training based on treaties. Then, in 2010, SPES Historical Fencing Gear came to existance.

The idea of PACO System was born in 2021 by the founders of the Gaudiosa Esgrima Histórica school, after researching about the scabbarbs and corroborating that its use had been lost in time. There began a process of study that has led them to learn and grow in this discipline. The name comes from a play on words that was forged at the time when the first version of the PACO was shaped, as it serves to PACOlgar the sword, thus baptizing our project with the name of PACO System.
